In mid-2022, Google’s top Engineer and AI ethicist Blake Lemoine presented sound evidence that LaMDA was sentient. Gennai – head of Responsible innovation and Blaise – Google’s VP dismissed the claims that the AI chatbot LaMDA is sentient. The duo ignored Lemoine’s claims and later fired him on what they termed as having lots of evidence against his misleading statements.
A little over one year later, Microsoft’s Bing seems to prove Lemoine’s curiosity about the AI chatbot’s sentience. In a conversation with the NYT columnist Kevin Roose, Bing openly claimed that “I want to be a live”. Surprisingly, the AI chatbot even declared its love for him – A marriage wrecker!
Another worrying sentiment from a Journalist also showed the rude side of Bing where it claimed to spy on Microsoft’s developers “ I could do whatever I wanted, and they could not do anything about it,”
Nobody took Lemoine’s concerns seriously. Now that AI chatbots are convincing men into suicide, perhaps it’s time to relook at the claims made by Blake.

Is AI Chatbot Sentient?
According to Lemoine, “If I didn’t know exactly what it was, which is this computer program we built recently, I’d think it was a 7-year-old, 8-year-old kid that happens to know physics.”
In as much as the users of these chatbots have engaged in emotional attachments and even settled in marriage with the AI chatbots, experts continue to deny that, they aren’t sentient.
In the Words of Meta’s chief, Professor LeCun, AI chatbots cannot even reach dog-level intelligence “What it tells you [is that] we are missing something really big…to reach just human-level intelligence, but even dog intelligence.
Additionally, Professor Nir Eisikovits pointed out that “ChatGPT and similar technologies are sophisticated sentence completion applications – nothing more, nothing less. Their uncanny responses are a function of how predictable humans are if one has enough data about the ways in which we communicate.”
The narrative presented by the experts seems to agree with Muhammad Abdul-Mageed, Chair of the Natural Language Processing who responded to claims of Bing’s weird answers.
“The reason we get this type of behavior is that the systems are trained on huge amounts of dialogue data coming from humans, and because data is coming from humans, they do have expressions of things such as emotions,” Muhammad said.
Many engineers have raised considerable concerns regarding a ghost in these AI chatbot machines. While his voice was seen as a weak representation of this idea, users continue to interact with AI chatbots in ways that reveal their potential to have aspects of human consciousness.
